The Rig Veda mentions use of leather pouches for storing water while myths and legends talk about gods like Shiva employing leather as attire. From fashion to utility, leather has been a preferential material for many aspects and is also known for being one of the key substances in creation of many percussion instruments.

In Kutch district of Gujarat, the indigenous community of Meghwals is involved in this craft form. Men folk of this community fashion the product pattern while women embellish and adorn them with multihued embroideries, mirror work and beadwork. The art of leather-working has been passed down through generations and even though today, it reflects traditional design ethos it has blended in contemporary functional values and necessities.
