Dang

About

Dang's rich vibrant communities are a part of the natural surroundings they inhabit and utilize the traits and forms of nature in the manifestation of their artifacts!

Dangs is the smallest district of Gujarat nestled at the northernmost tip of the Sayadri range. Saputara, “abode of serpents” is the district capital with Ahwa and Waghai being important trade centers for local jungle produce and rural artifacts. Dang district borders Maharashtra and the Dangi culture is a mixture of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

It is rich in natural biodiversity and plays host to a wide range of plant and animal life. These factors in turn have influenced the life, culture and rituals of the Dangi people. The forest cover is rich in Teak, Sisso, Khair, Bamboo, and other medicinal plants. The district of Dang is peopled by number of different ethnic communities, chief amongst them being Kokanis, Bhils and Warlis. Their ritual and culture is completely immersed in the forest and the forces of nature. They revere animals, such as crocodile, panther, python etc and these find meaning in their wooden sculptures and wall paintings.
