Jamnagar

About

Jamnagar, an old kingdom guarding the entrance to the Gulf of Kutch is noted for its princely valor and patronage for its arts and crafts. It is an important district in Kathiawar region of Gujarat and is home to a profusion of color, gaiety and motif design elements, illustrated through the crinkly folds of its Bandhani creations. Bandhej or Bandhani is what Jamnagar is famous for! The Jamnagar coast is rich marine life nurtured by mangrove lagoons giving way to some of the best un-spoilt coastline of Gujarat.

This landscape and colorful history dating back to Puranic lore has led to the development of a craft tradition ranging from tie and dye work on textiles to detailed embroidery, embellished with bead work and shells from the rich coastal region. Shell and bead work also find a place of prominence in the soft toys and decorative hangings which are a hallmark of the region. Jamnagar also hosts communities engaged in weaving and ornamental wood and metal work leading to some examples of decorative furniture and a series of handcrafted wooden toys.
The town of Jam Khambalia in the district is known for its distinctive woven Shawls.

Jamnagar is also famous for 'Kajal' or 'Kohl' as the Arab traders who first introduced it to the west called it.
