Rajkot

About

The district of Rajkot centrally located in Saurashtra is almost entirely land locked exposing a small footprint of herself to the Gulf of Kutch. The climate of the district is sub-tropical, that is, hot and dry with the rains bringing in succor and the post rainy season is a time for a variety of colorful fairs and festivals in the region. These are frequented by communities of Ahirs, Bharwads, Kathi Darbars and Rabaris all of whom have contributed to the multicultural variety of this district.

Rajkot district is an amalgamation of the old Saurashtra kingdoms namely Morbi, Wakaner, Gondal, Veerpur and Rajkot itself. Due to the affluence of the various ruling families, grand palaces and public buildings in stone were erected as an example of Hindu influence and colonial character. The thriving business communities in these towns commissioned grand Havelis in carved wood and stone.

Silver and goldsmiths belonging to the Soni community have traditionally been working on intricate designs and fascinating patterns of jewelry. Goldsmiths and jewelry polishers have also been patronized by the affluent business communities and royal families. Textiles embellished with colorful embroidery are distinctive beacons of the various communities wearing and making them.

Rajkot district is also known for its textile printing and the main center of this craft form is Jethpur in Southern Rajkot. Master craftsmen who earlier catered to the rich and royal, are now utilizing their expertise in wood and metal embossing to make small articles and ornamental objects.
